How to Create a Freelance Contract

A clear freelance contract helps both sides understand the project before work begins. It should explain what will be delivered, when it will be delivered, how payment works, and what happens if the scope changes. A contract is not a sign of distrust; it is a practical way to reduce confusion.

Describe the project

Identify the client, freelancer, service, deliverables, format, and project objective. Avoid vague phrases such as “provide ongoing support” without explaining what that support includes. List the number of articles, designs, hours, meetings, or revisions when possible.

Set deadlines and milestones

Include the start date, delivery dates, review periods, and client responsibilities. If you need materials or approvals from the client, explain how delays may affect the schedule.

Explain payment

State the total fee or rate, deposit, milestones, invoice timing, payment method, and due date. Clarify whether expenses, taxes, or additional work are included. Never hide important costs.

Define revisions and changes

Specify how many revisions are included and how new requests will be priced. A change process protects the project from expanding without agreement.

Cover ownership and confidentiality

Explain when the client receives rights to the final work and whether you may display it in your portfolio. Address confidential information and access to files. Requirements vary by location, so obtain qualified legal advice for important or complex agreements.

Review before signing

Read every clause and make sure both parties understand it. Keep a signed copy and store project communications safely. Improve your professional skills through our courses and learn more about the academy on our About Us page. A good contract is specific, balanced, and easy to understand.
